Full Description

Louth Cemetery was established in 1854 by the town's Burial Board, at a cost of about £2700. It originally consisted of about 10 acres, with an entrance lodge (see PRN 47170), and two chapels. The Anglican chapel (see PRN 45527) and half the ground was consecrated by the Bishop on the 29th of December 1855, with the other part of the cemetery and the second chapel being for the use of nonconformists (see PRN 47169). {1}{2}{3} Overcrowded conditions at the original burial ground at the Church of St Mary had prompted increasing calls for a new burial ground to be established within the town. The site for the new cemetery off London Road was chosen in 1854, following complaints from local residents regarding the overcrowding and exposure of dismembered bodies at the old site, including an article by William Brown in the Mercury newspaper of September 1843. {4} The original area of the cemetery (10 acres) was expanded southwards during the 20th century, as is visible on later Ordnance Survey mapping. {5}
