Full Description
The former nonconformist chapel is one of a pair of matching chapels within Louth Cemetery (see PRN 47171), the other being for Anglicans (see PRN 45527). It was built in 1855, in a mock Gothic style of grey brick with limestone dressings. It has steeply pitched slate roofs, with a tall bellcote over the front porch. The structure has 'cut away' corners and trefoil, tripartite leaded windows. {1}{2}{3}{4}
The cemetery chapels are believed to have been designed by the Louth-born architect Pearson Bellamy, who also designed the nearby cemetery lodge (see PRN 47170). {5}
The chapel was converted to be used as an Antiochian Orthodox Church in the late 1990s. It is now dedicated to St Aethelheard, who was abbot of a monastery at Louth in about 750 AD. Aethelheard was consecrated Bishop of Winchester at some time between 759 and 778 AD, and later became Archbishop of Canterbury in 793 AD. {6}{7}
