Full Description

A memorial commemorating the victims of the catastrophic Louth flood of 1920 sits within Louth Cemetery, between the cemetery chapels. Considerable rainfall fell on the town and surrounding area on the afternoon of Saturday the 29th of May 1920, causing a sudden and dramatic rise to the River Lud at about 5pm. A torrent of water rushed through the town, sweeping away buildings and causing extensive damage, resulting in the deaths of 23 people. A memorial to the victims was unveiled on the 3rd anniversary of the tragedy, on Tuesday the 29th of May 1923. The memorial was designed by Mawer Brothers of Louth, and takes the form of a 12ft high obelisk of grey Aberdeen granite, standing on a stepped series of 4 square base plinths. The memorial is inscribed on the southern face with the names of the victims, and with the parts of verses 2 and 15 of Psalm 69. {1}{2}
