Full Description
The cemetery lodge to Louth Cemetery is thought to date to 1855. It is built in a Victorian Tudor style, of red brick with ashlar stone dressings and slate roofs, battlemented pediment, tower and oriel windows. {1}{2}
The cemetery lodge was designed by the Louth-born architect Pearson Bellamy, and is believed to have been one of his earliest commissions. The design is powerful and striking, requiring visitors to enter the cemetery by means of a short tunnel passing beneath the building. The building is roughly L-shaped on plan, with a tall, long principal range aligned east to west which incorporates the entrance archway, side off-shuts and an attached octagonal tower to the south of the entrance arch. Attached retaining walls flank the archway on both front and rear elevations. An inset panel is located towards the top of the front elevation and bears the inscription 'ERECTED A.D. 185-' (the final numeral is now missing). For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {3}
Some uncertainty exists regarding the exact date of this building, with the list description claiming 1853. The land for the cemetery was not obtained until 1854, however, and the date of 1855 therefore seems more likely. {4}
