Full Description

A complex of former malt houses are depicted in this location on the 1std edition 6 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map. This map also records that a Roman kiln was found on the site in 1864, along with several Roman artefacts (see PRN 30341). The finding of these artefacts might indicate a period of construction or expansion of the malt house complex at that time. {1} Remains associated with the malt house complex were identified during archaeological monitoring of a geotechnical investigation, undertaken on the site in February 2005. The complex is thought to have been constructed in 1856, and was recorded on historic mapping of this area until its demolition in the 1970s. The investigation exposed the remnants of a short length of north to south aligned brick wall, thought to have formed part of an internal wall of one of the malt house structures. The monitoring also recorded the presence of demolition debris spread across several parts of the site, and clearly associated with the removal of the malt houses in the 20th century. {2}{3} Further fragments of the largely demolished malt house complex were revealed in February 2006, during trial trenching conducted to inform proposed residential development. The investigation uncovered former wall footings, floor levels, made ground and load bearing brick pillars associated with the mill. Demolition deposits from its destruction in the 1970s were also identified. {4}{5} Additional traces of the former malt house complex were recorded in March 2006, during subsequent excavation of part of the Baird's Mill site. The investigation recorded a series of 16 load bearing pillars, that had helped to suport the cellar floor of the former malt house in this location, along with a large spread of 19th century material at the southern end of the excavated site, likely associated with the complex's construction. {6}{7}
