Abstract/Summary

Archive for the archaeological watching brief and excavation, conducted on land at Baird's Mill, Ermine Street, Ancaster. The excavation was targeted to investigate the remains of a Roman ditch, discovered during previous work on this site, and recorded further remains of the feature and a number of likely associated linear gullies. Additional fragments of 2nd to 4th century Roman pottery and animal bone were recovered from the fill of the ditch, along with a probably residual fragment from a patera handle. Further traces off the largely demolished, mid 19th century malt house complex that previously occupied the site were also recorded. The watching brief was conducted during the removal of grain silos on the site, but identified no additional archaeology.
