Full Description
A general scatter of post-medieval material was noted across this field in August 2001, during a walkover survey, undertaken to assess the impact of proposed development on land off the Hayfields, Wygate Park, Spalding. {1}
Subsequent geophysical surveys conducted in January 2002 recorded the remains of former agricultural activity of likely post-medieval date. The activity was identified as a number of linear magnetic trends, thought to represent former field boundaries, ditches or ploughing activity. {2}
Further field walking conducted in January 2002 recovered a general scatter of post-medieval pottery and finds from across the site. The even spread of material suggests it results from manuring scatters. {3}
A series of post-medieval ditches were revealed in May 2003, during subsequent trial trenching of the site. The ditches were orientated east to west across the entire site and were interpreted as former field boundaries, possibly with their origins in the medieval use of dylings to create drier areas of grazing. A small quantity of post-medieval pottery was recovered from some of the ditch fills.
The trial trenching also identified a small concentration of post-medieval brick, focussed on TF 2364 2369. Some of the pieces appeared undefined and were perhaps wasters. This could be suggestive of a brick-making site in the vicinity, although the small size of the assemblage makes this interpretation far from conclusive. {4}{5}
A series of dumped deposits were recorded in August 2012, during excavation of land at Westerly Way, Wygate Park, Spalding. The deposits were thought to represent upcast material from the cutting or maintenance of the adjacent drains. Sections were also dug through two of the east to west aligned boundary ditches previously identified, and confirmed their likely function as field boundaries. An isolated refuse pit containing a fragment of post-medieval brick was also recorded. {6}{7}
