Full Description

62970 St Germain's church is constructed of coursed and random rubble with ashlar dressings. It contains Transitional and Early English features, including the south doorway. The north aisle was rebuilt on the old foundations (dating to about 1300) in 1820. The chancel was restored in 1843 by Sir Edward Ffrench Bromhead. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} A watching brief carried out in March 2009, during drainage works in the churchyard, revealed part of the foundations of the medieval tower, which was composed of roughly hewn, coursed limestone. A small cut was visible in the foundations, lined with bricks and mortar. Remains of a brick structure were found on the north side of the tower, probably relating to a building (now demolished) which was latterly in use as a coal shed. Three undated inhumations (all adults) were uncovered in excavations at the north-eastern corner of the church, while another feature, identified as a gravecut, was located on the south side of the church. Early to middle Saxon pottery was found in two cut features located near to the gate at the south-west corner of the churchyard (see PRN 65681). {7}{8}
