Full Description
PRN 65681
Two features containing early to middle Saxon pottery were located by a watching brief in March 2009, during excavations for a pipe trench in the churchyard at St Germain's church, Thurlby. The pipe trench (c. 600mm wide x 800mm deep) ran east from outside the church gate, following the route of the footpath. The first feature was 3.6m wide and at least 0.28m deep, extending west from a point just inside the gate. Two sherds of Saxon pottery, dated mid 6th to 8th century, were retrieved from the uppermost fill of the feature. The second feature, located slightly further to the east, was 2.46m wide and at least 0.30m deep. Three sherds of mid 6th to 8th century pottery were recovered from the earliest fill visible in the trench. Both features were interpreted as ditches aligned approximately north to south. Further early to middle Saxon pottery occurred as residual deposits across the site, while three undated features - a possible gully, posthole and ditch - in the south-western part of the site were sealed by an identical deposit to that sealing the large ditches, and might therefore be attributable to the same phase of activity. The location of the site - on high ground, flanked by the River Witham to the east and smaller watercourse to the west - and the association with St Germain's church, suggests the possibility of an ecclesiastical origin, comparable to that recorded on known minster sites. {1}{2}
