Full Description

PRN 54826 Geophysical survey and archaeological evaluation was undertaken at Caistor Grammar School, Caistor. Geophysical survey identified discrete linear anomalies and high magnetic responses towards the westren half of the playing field. {1} As a consequence, three trial trenches were excavated. The first trench had a north to south aligned ditch, cut into an extensive deposit of windblown sand. The ditch was 2nd to 3rd century date. The second trench contained two irregular depressions, interpreted as the bases of heavily truncated pits, again dating to the 2nd to 3rd century. Trench 3 contained two small northeast to southwest aligned ditches, one of which had an associated bank and post hole arrangement (interpreted as a possible boundary ditch and bank, with an accompanying fence line). Worked flints of late Mesolithic to early Neolithic date were found within the ditch fills, obviously derived from secondary deposits {2} {3} An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on land situated off the north side of Navigation Lane, Caistor, to investigate an area of land belonging to Caistor Grammar School. The watching brief identified a number of ditches, gullies and pits dating to the Romano-British period. The evidence collected during the fieldwork suggests that there was some type of direct settlement on the site during the Romano-British period. It is likely that the archaeological remains extend beyound the limit of the groundworks monitored during the watching brief {4} {5} A watching brief carried out during construction of new sports facilities at Caistor Grammar school uncovered further Romano-British features. These consist of a sequence of inter-cutting linear features, probably representing boundary or drainage ditches, which had been re-cut at least three times. A large quantity of Romano-British pottery was recovered from these features, as well as iron hammerscale indicative of metal working. Animal bone was also recovered. {6}{7}
