Full Description

PRN 54827 Geophysical survey conducted on land at Caistor Grammar School, Caistor identified a north-east to south-west aligned linear anomaly towards the northwestern edge of the proposed development site. {1} Excavation by trial trench identified this feature to be a palaeo-channel. The feature is thought to represent an earlier course of the stream that runs along the northern edge of the playing field; it's fill was identical in composition to the sandy material deposited within the base of the present stream channel. A large volume of fired clay and charcoal was found towards the southern slope of the feature, and it is thought that this represents the remains of a wattle and daub structure destroyed by fire, the residues being collected and then dumped along the edge. Two sherds of Romano-British pottery found within this deposit suggest a late 1st millennium BC to early 1st millennium AD date. {1} {2}
