Full Description
Cropmarks of former trackways of unknown date were identified on aerial photographs dating to the 1970s and 1980s by the National Mapping Programme. {1}
A probable continuation of one of the previously recorded linear features in this area was recorded in May 2011, during magnetometry survey of land to the immediate north of Ropsley Quarry suggesting the potential for further remains on the site which had not already been identified in cropmarks. The feature was identified as a narrow, ditch-like linear magnetic anomaly, running in a roughly south to north direction, and curving to match the alignment of the previously identified feature. {2}
Follow up trial trenching investigations in 2021 found that while the archaeology is fairly well represented by the cropmarks, that several features were present not identified in cropmarks or geophysics, but that in other areas there was a strong correlation. Evidence was recorded for a palaeochannel and a series of likely agricultural ditches, with a small quantity of Iron Age pottery being recovered. {3}{4}
