Full Description

Mid 18th century former public house, now single cottage. Built of red brick, of single storey plus attic and 4 bays. Features a pantile roof with two red brick gable stacks, rendered coped gables and dogtooth eaves. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The Old Rising Sun was the subject of a programme of historical building recording, conducted in July 2001, to inform proposed alterations. The building dates to the mid 18th century, and was originally divided into two small adjoining cottages. These cottages were combined into one property in the early 19th century, when a rear service range was also added and internal alterations were made, and the adjacent former stables and workshop block was constructed (see PRN 49664). The building is believed to have been partially converted to use as a public house in the mid 19th century, although was not named as the 'Rising Sun' until 1930, when a Rose Riley was listed as a beer retailer here. The building reverted back to being a private residence at some point in the later 20th century. {2}
