Full Description
PRN 62269
The west wall is Saxo-Norman in date, having side-alternate quoins at the north-west corner of the originally aisleless nave, while the remainder of the building appears to be Transitional in style, combining round and pointed arches and Norman and Early English motifs. The nave and chancel are in one, with a double bell-cote. Two rectangular windows in the south wall suggest a 17th or 18th century rebuild, while Perpendicular windows can be found either side of the porch. The north arcade is of two bays, and a fragment of a pillar piscina in the north-east corner is Norman. The font is a Norman drum font. {1}
St Michael's church is built of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and a plain tile roof. The church is now vested in the Historic Churches Preservation Trust, and consists of a nave and chancel under a single roof, with a north aisle and south porch. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2}
Stained glass in this church dates to about 1200-1250 AD and to the 13th century, and the high quality work contrasts with the small size and humility of the church. {3}
A church and a priest are mentioned in the Domesday Book. {5}
