BRANT BROUGHTON AND STRAGGLETHORPE SK 95 SW 6/57 STRAGGLETHORPE LANE (west side) Church of St Michael 23.8.67 GV I Parish Church, now vested in the Historic Churches Preservation Trust. C11, late C12, C15 and C18, restored c1980. Nave and chancel under single roof, with north aisle and south porch. Coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, and plain tile roof. Coped gables with quoins and moulded plinth at east end. West gable wall has angle buttresses plus large single late C12 buttress with set-off and ogee headed niche, covering blocked doorway. Gable topped by double arched, gabled bellcote. Single lancet in west wall of north aisle. North wall has single round headed slightly chamfered doorway and round headed lancet in east wall. Chancel has 2 similar lancets in east wall. South wall has 3 small irregular lights plus a C15 2-light cusped window. Gabled south porch has coped gable with kneelers and buttresses, the opening has a moulded chamfered pointed arch with hood mould and head label stops. South doorway arch is also pointed with a billet frieze. Interior has late C12 2 bay north arcade with round, double chamfered arches and octagonal pier and responds with moulded capitals. West wall has blocked C11 triangular headed doorway. Fragment of C11, pillar piscina in chancel. Drum shaped C11 font with blind arcading. Fine plain panelled early C18 box pews throughout with large family pew and double-decker pulpit; also retains turned wooden candlesticks. C18 hatchment. Good monument of 1697 to Richard Earle by Green of Camberwell, black and white marble with 2 busts in front of pilasters with drapes raised revealing commemorative epitaph and topped with urns and coat of arms.
