Full Description

A church and a priest are mentioned in the Domesday Book (31/17), and the first notice of a rector was 1225. Most of the west tower appears to be genuinely 13th century. The rest of the church was rebuilt in 1749 and again in 1854-55, when the new south wall of the nave was erected on the foundations of the old south wall, and the pillars of the new church follow the line of the old north wall. It has a nave, north aisle and chancel. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} Construction deposits relating to the re-build or restoration of the north aisle of the church were recorded in December 2012, during archaeological monitoring of groundworks for new drainage. The deposits comprised layers of sandy gravel and limestone fragments, upon which a foundation course of coursed limestone rubble was laid. This was in turn overlain by a single course of bricks, upon which the ashlar walls of the north aisle were built. A single fragment of probably medieval morter, likely associated with the 13th century tower, was also recovered during the monitoring. {6}{7}
