Full Description
PRN 44016
An evaluation and watching brief recorded features indicating the presence of a rural domestic settlement, dated from the late second century to at least the early third century from pottery finds. Ditches and gullies representing land boundaries were recorded, and a pit contained primary domestic rubbish deposits, including pottery, animal bone, glass, charcoal, burnt flint and fired clay. No surface scatters of pottery were found on the site, indicating a probable high level of preservation of Romano-British deposits due to lack of disturbance from later agricultural activity. During trial trenching in June 2009 before the development of land at Sleaford Road, Archaeological Project Services revealed three ditches or possible field boundaries which contained Romano British pottery in Trench One. The first contained nine sherds of 3rd century pottery and an animal bone fragment, the seoncd contained four fragments of 2nd to 3rd century pottery, two fragments of cattle skull and mammal bone and the third contained a sherd of pottery which dated from 125AD onwards. {3}{4}
