Full Description

PRN 70220 During fieldwalking centred on TF0033 7278, a small number of fragments of Roman tile were recovered.{1}{2} During trial trenching, two ditches, one aligned north/south, a possible posthole, and a ditch cut or pit were recorded. Although undated, these features post-date the abandonment of the triple-ditched feature (see PRN 50348), and so are thought to be Romano-British in date. Finds of brick, tile and tegulae suggest the presence of a building in the vicinity.{3}{4}{5} During geophysical survey centred on TF0060 7258, a strong magnetic anomaly was detected which was thought to be a possible corn drier.{6} Excavations in 2001 revealed a possible track with pottery dated 100-200 AD in the tertiary fill. This may be the north-east end of a trackway represented by several lengths of shallow linear hollow (undated but possibly Iron Age) passing north-west of the triple ditch system (50348) on a north-east/south-west alignment. Possible offshoot tracks run south-east between the corridors formed by the ditch system. Other possible Roman features consisted of pits. Pottery finds were mainly second century, primarily the first quarter, in contrast to the third century dates from the Greetwell settlement (52842), suggesting an unrelated focus of activity. Pottery finds indicate continued use of the track in this period , possibly still recognising the ditch system as a prominent feature in the landscape. Samian ware suggests wealthy occupants, while black-burnished ware from Dorset suggests a military presence.{7}{8}
