Full Description

The route of the Old River Bain where it passes close to Tumby may be a straightening of a more meandering former course of the river. The earlier course is well-defined by interlocking sand islands. These were observed during fieldwalking on land at Tumby in 1998. {1} {2} Trial trenching in the same location in 2000 exposed three main palaeochannels masked by flood deposits in a long trench dug across the river valley. The earliest was on the northern side of the valley and was Neolithic in date. A channel at the southern edge of the valley was Bronze Age in date, and the third channel to its north was dated to the late Roman/Saxon period. {3} {4} The upper fill of a north-south aligned palaeochannel was uncovered during excavations in 2004. {5}{6}
