Full Description

PRN 61212 [This record includes information from PRN 61202 and 61211, now deleted.] During an evaluation, a large pit, a ditch and two gullies were recorded. The pit may represent a borrow pit, with the extracted sand and gravel possibly used for what is now Sleaford's East Road. A sherd of post-medieval pottery was found in the upper fill (redeposited natural). The ditch and gullies are thought to be drainage ditches associated with the borrow pit. A system of noth-east/south-west aligned ditches and a plough furrow containing a clay pipe stem were also recorded. Two of the ditches, 3m apart, may be ditches recorded as cropmarks by the NMR. {1}{2} During a watching brief at TF0792 4701 a post-medieval pit was recorded, from which a fragment of handmade brick or tile was recovered. {3}{4} Post medieval pottery was recovered from the surface and topsoil during a watching brief.{5}{6} During trial trenching centred on TF 0775 4705, two sherds of 18th century pottery and four pieces of clay pipe stem (two linked) were recovered. Three pieces of pipe stem were of 18th century date, while the fourth was of 19th century date. {7}{8}
