Full Description

The settlement of Doddington is first mentioned in the Domesday Book. There was a manor there belonging to St Peter of Westminster which also had land in Haddington, Whisby, South Hykeham, North Hykeham and Skellingthorpe. A church and priest are mentioned. Doddington probably means 'the farmstead associated with or called after Dodda or Dudda' from the Old English. It is mentioned in documentary sources throughout the medieval period. {1}{2} Parts of the ridge and furrow field system are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs. {3}{4} Parts of Doddington village are visible on an early eighteenth century illustration of Doddington Hall and its associated buildings. There are about 20 families recorded as living in Doddington and Whisby in the early eighteenth century. {5}{7} Archaeological evaluation undertaken at some point between the 1st and 28th February 2003, identified two parallel, east to west running, ditches of post-medieval date (17th to 19th century). Despite the sites proximity to the core of the medieval village, no earlier archaeological deposits were encountered. {8} {9}
