Full Description

This is a large Roman site with possible earthworks in the field. Finds include pottery, tesserae, roofing, hypocaust and brick tiles. The SMR card file lists TF 136 436 as the grid reference. A further site is located at TF 145 436, the description of which is identical to the Cobham Hall villa site . This may be Roman pottery only (see PRN 60868). Further finds from the vicinity of the villa include a bronze ring key, an enamelled brooch, Roman coins, including one which was silver. {1}{2} A large amount of Romano-British finds were recovered from this field during field walking by the local society in Heckington. Finds included 58 fragments of tile (12 marked), 146 tesserae, large numbers of pottery sherds, including grey ware, colour-coated ware, Samian, black sandy sherds. Slightly to the west of this at TF 140 436 further Romano-British finds were recovered in May 1977. The pottery included grey ware, Dales ware, Samian, colour-coated ware, yellow ware, dark sandy ware, shell-gritted ware. There were also 89 fragments of tile, and 11 tesserae. It is thought that this may be a building associated with the villa site. {3}{4}
