Full Description

The village cross at Washingborough has been restored. The original four steps and base were restored in 1947. The shaft and cross head are modern. {1}{2} The foundations of a village cross, a base consisting of four steps and a socket-stone, all of which are principally medieval, 15th century, in date. The steps are roughly square in plan and are constructed of limestone blocks around a mortared rubble core. The edges of the three lower steps are slightly chamfered. The socket-stone is 0.86m square and approximately 0.55m high, the corners are moulded and chamfered so that the top of the stone is octagonal in section. A stone slab in the eastern face of the lowest step contains an inscription recording the restoration of 1947. Set into the socket-stone is the stone shaft, of rectangular section at the base rising through chamfered corners to an ornamented knop; above it is the cross-head, which takes the form of a stone crucifix. The shaft and head date from the restoration of the cross in 1903. There is a full description in the revised scheduling document 22627 and in the list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest. {3}{5} The base is 3 yards and 29 inches square. {4} Washingborough war memorial stands on the village green on High Street. The cross, surmounting a tapered column on a four-stepped base, is a replacement for the original fifteenth century market cross which stood there. The replica was produced in 1903 by Miss Curtois, an artist and benefactor. A tablet commemorating the fallen of the First World War is situated in the church; however it is the cross which has become the centre of remembrance ceremonies in the village since 1947. {7}
