Full Description

THE SETTLEMENT OF WICKENBY LIES ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF A LOW RIDGE. DESPITE CONSIDERABLE DESTRUCTION, THE FIELD REMAINS, TOGETHER WITH THE EVIDENCE FROM EXISTING ROAD ALIGNMENTS AND PROPERTY BOUNDARIES INDICATE THAT THE VILLAGE HAS UNDERGONE AT LEAST ONE MAJOR CHANGE OF PLAN. THIS INVOLVED NOT ONLY THE DIVERSION OF THE MAIN STREET AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A REGULAR PATTERN OF CLOSES, BUT ALSO THE EXTENSION AND PERHAPS THE REORGANISATION OF THE MANORIAL CURIA. WITH OCCASIONAL EXCEPTIONS, WICKENBY'S POPULATION INDICATORS GENERALLY INCLUDE WESTLABY. IN 1086 WICKENBY HAD A MINUMUM OF 15 PERSONS. POSSIBLY HALF THE POPULATION WERE LOST AS A RESULT OF THE BLACK DEATH. AT LEAST 10 HOUSEHOLDS EXISTED IN 1428. {1}, HTM 20M
