Full Description

THERE WERE 17 HOUSEHOLDS IN 1563 AND 83 COMMUNICANTS IN 1603. SOME DEPOPULATION WAS REPORTED BY THE SURVEY OF 1607, THE LAND OF THE FARM BEING ENGROSSED AND THE FARMHOUSE LEFT EMPTY. THE PARISH WAS ENCLOSED BETWEEN 1625 AND 1638 BUT THERE IS NO CLEAR EVIDENCE FOR A RELATED DECLINE IN POPULATION. IN 1662 18 PERSONS PAID THE HEARTH TAX, THERE WERE 65 COMMUNICANTS IN 1676, AND BY THE EARLY C18 THERE WERE 26 HOUSEHOLDS IN THE PARISH. AFTER SOME FALL TO 21-25 HOUSES IN THE FIRST FOUR DECADES OF THE C19, THE POPULATION MORE DOUBLED IN THE LATER 1840'S, PRINCIPALLY WITH NEW BUILDINGS OUTSIDE THE OLD SETTLEMENT NUCLEUS. {1} NOS 1-4 STATION ROAD HAS THE REMAINS OF A SUBSTANTIAL C16 TIMBER-FRAMED HOUSE BEHIND ITS EXTERIOR. {2}
