Full Description

Caistor grew from 63 households in 1583 to 193 in 1801 but then grew dramatically in the 1820's and 1830's to almost double that number. The large rectangular marketplace, now much reduced by infilling by blocks of property, was sited outside the Roman walled enclosure to the east. A pattern of long narrow properties with back lanes is preserved on the west and north, extending along High Street; those south of High Street, west of the Market Square and along Plough Hill are either squashed against the walled enclosure or override it. Only in the later 18th century did some development of the back lanes begin and only in the 20th century was there substantial growth outside the earlier framework. See Pevsner for descriptions of the 17th to 19th century buildings in Caistor. {1}{2}{3}{4} An excavation was carried out in 1963 in the garden of Grimsby Cooperative Society. A well-built, stone-lined and roughly circular pit was revealed. It received the outfall of a neat brick-lined drain. The drain and the existing lip of the pit are to be associated with an occupation level of the 18th century, when a dwelling house probably existed on the site. {5} Three undated ditches and several modern features were revealed in 2003, during trial trenching undertaken on land at North Street, Caistor (PRN 52692a - TA 1182 0152). It is likely that the undated ditches are probably of post-medieval date. A single sherd of redeposited Anglo-Saxon pottery was also retrieved from the topsoil. {6}{7} Post-medieval dumped layers were identified during archaeological monitoring undertaken on land at South Street, Caistor (PRN 52692b - TA 1186 0127). Finds of 18th to 20th century pottery and an 18th century clay pipe stem were recovered from the deposits. {8}{9} During an archaeological evaluation on land at 16 High Street (the site of the former Talbot Inn), traces of buildings pre-dating the inn were discovered. A potential construction slot was observed which probably relates to occupation along the street front during the medieval or earlier post-medieval periods (see PRN 52691). There may be further remains elsewhere on the site, in areas not yet investigated, however much of the site has been heavily truncated by late post-medieval or early modern terracing. {10}{11} A large amount of bone was found in May 2010, by a property owner during digging of his garden in Caistor. The bone was identified as animal, including sheep, cattle and smaller mammal. Many of the bones showed evidence of butchery. {12} Post-medieval activity was recorded in 2010, during archaeological monitoring on the site of the former Talbot Inn (PRN 52692c - TA 1182 0143). The recorded features included a well, 19th century cellars and a rectangular brick structure which may have been a small cellar, and from which a sherd of 16th to 17th century pottery was recovered. {13}{14}
