Full Description
Scampton village assumes an L-shape. The surviving medieval earthworks are extremely scrappy, though they and the settlement's underlying morphology give rise to some analytical comments. A great impact was had on the settlement remains by C. Illingworth (Rector, 1783-1823), particularly by emparkment. The repeated re-alignments of roads and new housing developments in recent years have effectively obscured the earlier pattern. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
A single redeposited sherd of 14th to 15th century medieval pottery was recovered in May 1995, during archaeological monitoring of residential development on land off High Street, Scampton (PRN 52160a - SK 9488 7918). {6}{7}
The remains of an east to west aligned ditch was identified in October 1996, during archaeological monitoring of residential development on land adjacent to the High Street, Scampton (PRN 52160b - SK 9487 7922). A single sherd of 13th to 14th century Potterhanworth type pottery was recovered from the fill, along with a single adult sheep tooth. Further sherds of similar pottery and sheep bone fragments were recovered from an overlying buried soil layer. {8}{9}
Traces of medieval ridge and furrow were identified in May 2014, during magnetometry survey conducted to inform proposed residential development on land at Manor Farm, Scampton (PRN 52160c - SK 9501 7922). The remains were identified as a series of parallel linear magnetic anomalies, aligned on a roughly north to south axis. The remains of a post-medieval well were also identified, a short distance to the west. The well is depicted on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. {10}{11}
