Full Description

Scampton Hall was probably built in the early 17th century. It was described in 1672 as 'handsome', with outhouses, dovecotes, stables, barns, orchards, walled gardens and a small park. It became ruined in the late 18th century, when it was replaced by the current farmhouse on the site, known as Scampton House. The current structure is said to have incorporated some walls of Scampton Hall; all that now remains of the earlier hall is an elaborate stone arched gateway of early 17th century date. To the north-east of the archway the stone foundations of substantial buildings have been truncated by a modern fence and dyke. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} A great many alterations were carried out by Cayley Illingworth in the late 18th century. The park is marked on Illingworth's sketch map of 1808, when a bowling green is depicted. {6} A former boundary wall of the formal gardens of Scampton Hall was identified in June 1995, during the archaeological monitoring of the construction of a new access road. The wall was made of limestone blocks, aligned on a north to south axis, and was located at the former eastern end of the garden. {7}{8} The boundary wall exposed in 1995 is depicted on the 1st edition 6 inch Ordnance Survey County Series map, where it shows the eastern limit of the former gardens. {9}
