Full Description

The original church of St John the Baptist was constructed in the 14th century, though was largely taken down and rebuilt, or at least extensively altered, in about 1760. In 1794 it was made smaller by Illingworth. It was again largely altered in 1876-7 when the chancel and the north aisle were rebuilt. It is in normal use. {1}{2}{3}{4} The church is constructed in coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings. It has plain tiled and slate roofs with stone coped gables. The 14th century tower still stands and there are some 16th century elements which still survive, most notably the three bay north arcade and some window mouldings. In the chancel north wall there are two brass armorial wall plaques, one to Catherine Bolles, dated 1644 and the other to Sir John Bolles dating to 1648. There is a possibility that the windows in the north aisle, which were rebuilt in 1877, came from the demolished Scampton Manor House. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {5} Deposits related to the restoration of the church in 1876 were observed in April 1994, during the archaeological monitoring of groundworks for the installation of a new church organ in the Lady Chapel. The deposits comprised thick layers of mortar with larger inclusions of limestone and a few fragments of late 19th century material. Little structural details were exposed by the works in the Lady Chapel, which may support the idea that the layout of the present structure closely reflects the foundations of its predecessor. {6}{7}
