Full Description

THE EXCAVATION OF THE NETTLETON TOP ANGLO-SAXON SETTLEMENT SITE IN 1986-7 REVEALED SOME PREHISTORIC FINDS. THIS INCLUDED FLINTWORK (INCLUDING KNIFES), SOME OF WHICH MAY BE LATE NEOLITHIC-BRONZE AGE, AND POTTERY (SEE ALSO 51873). IN AREA 2 AN EMPTY UPRIGHT COLLARED URN WITH A SCATTER OF CREMATED BONE 1 METRE TO THE NORTH, A FRAGMENTARY INVERTED COLLARED URN CONTAINING CREMATED HUMAN REMAINS, AND A SMALL ACCESSORY VESSEL WHICH WAS EMPTY, WERE DISCOVERED. THESE MAY HAVE BEEN PLACED IN A BARROW, BUT PLOUGHING COULD HAVE ERASED ALL TRACE OF THE MOUND. {1}{2}
