Full Description

EXCAVATION IN 1986 AND 1987 (AREA 1) REVEALED A GRUBENHAUS (WITH POTTERY, ANIMAL BONE, BURNT STONES AND AN IRON KNIFE TO THE WEST OF THE BUILDING), TWO RUBBISH PITS (BOTH CONTAINING POTTERY, ANIMAL BONE, BURNT IRONSTONE AND BURNT CHALK), WITH A POSSIBLE HEARTH FURTHER SOUTH. IN 1987 (AREA 3) TWO MORE GRUBENHAUSER WERE FOUND ON THE SAME ALIGNMENT AS THE ONE IN AREA 1 (ASSOCIATED FINDS INCLUDE POTTERY, ANIMAL BONE, LOOMWEIGHTS, A QUERN FRAGMENT, AND A YELLOW GLASS BEAD WITH RED TRAILING DECORATION), AND TWO RUBBISH PITS (THE LARGER HAVING BEEN DUG AFTER THE ABANDONMENT OF THE GRUBENHAUS) WERE ALSO DISCOVERED. AREA 2 TWO IRONSTONE LINED FIRE PITS WERE DISCOVERED, AND A GREAT SQUARE- HEADED BROOCH, DATED 550-570AD, FOUND IN THE SUBSOIL AND NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANY STRUCTURE. OTHER FINDS INCLUDE TWEEZERS, IRON KNIFE BLADES, A SOCKETED IRON GRAVER OR GOUGE, AND CARBONIZED PLANT REMAINS. {1}{3}
