Full Description

THE EXTENDED MANORIAL COMPLEX CREATED BY THE MONSONS IN THE 16TH CENTURY WAS DESCRIBED IN 1607-8. THE HALL AND ITS SURROUNDING YARDS, GARDENS, PONDS AND ORCHARDS OCCUPIED A SQUARE-SHAPED BLOCK OF LAND OF ABOUT 200M BY 200M, WITH THE HOUSE AT ITS CENTRE STILL DEFINED BY HOLLOW WAYS AND BANKS. ON THE NORTHEAST AND SOUTHEAST SIDES OF THE ENCLOSED BLOCK, A FURTHER AREA IS DEFINED ON THE EAST BY A BROAD BANK ALONG THE HILLSIDE THAT OVERLIES RIDGE AND FURROW. IN THE WOUTH THE BANK TURNS ALONG AN EAST-WEST HEDGELINE AND THEN BRANCHES NORTH. ON THE NORTH IS A CONTINUOUS HEDGELINE, PERHAPS MARKING A FORMER WATERCOURSE. THE NORTHERN PART OF THIS AREA WAS NAMED 'PARK' IN 1805, 'THE PARK' IN 1845; THE SOUTHERN PART WAS NAMED 'LOW' AND 'LOWER WOODS' IN 1805, WHILST THE 3 CLOSES TO THE EAST AND FURTHER SOUTH WERE CALLED 'UPPER', 'LITTLE' AND 'GREAT WOODS'. THE NAMES 'LOWER', 'UPPER' AND 'GREATWOODS' WERE APPLIED TO THESE CLOSES IN 1720; TOTALLING JUST OVER 33 ACRES, THE SAME AS THE ENCLOSED GROUND CALLED 'THE WOODE' MENTIONNED IN 1607-8. THIS MAY HAVE BEEN A FORM OF PARK OR ORNAMENTAL BACKDROP TO THE MANOR, AND ALWAYS SUBDIVIDED INTO COMPARTMENTS, WHOSE DIVISIONS ARE PERPETUATED IN EXISTING OR ABANDONED HEDGELINES. THE ESTATE MAP OF 1720 SHOWS THESE CLOSES AS PASTURE AND ONLY THE L-SHAPED CLOSE IMMEDIATELY NORTH OF THE HOUSE (LATER KNOWN AS BACK PADDOCK, BACK GARDENS AND BULL PADDOCK) IS SHOWN AS TREE-PLANTED - PRESUMABLY WITH ORCHARDS. {1}
