Full Description

A PARK OR DEERPARK AT BULLINGTON IS CLEARLY DOCUMENTED ONLY IN THE EARLY MEDIEVAL PERIOD, AND LAY IN AN AREA CHARACTERISED BY LARGE AMMOUNTS OF MEDIEVAL MANAGED WOODLAND. A TOTAL OF 400 ACRES OF UNDERWOOD IS RECORDED UNDER BULLINGTON IN DOMESDAY BOOK. THIS PRESUMABLY REPRESENTED SOME OR ALL OF THE LATER MEDIEVAL MANAGED WOODLANDS OF 'COCKLODE, SPRING', AND PERHAPS 'SHORT WOOD', AND THE CLEARED 'WLVEDALE' IN BULLINGTON, AND PERHAPS ALSO WOODLAND IN GOLTHO PARISH. IN 1148-1154, SIMON DE KYME FOUNDED THE GILBERTINE PRIORY OF BULLINGTON IN HIS PARK OF BULLINGTON, BUT ENDOWED IT WITH ONLY 'PART OF MY PARK THAT THEY MAY DWELL THERE, AND PART OF MY WOOD AND MY LAND ON THE NORTH AND EAST SIDES OF THE SAID HOUSE'. PHILIP DE KYME STILL REFERED TO HIS PARK IN c1175, WHEN MAKING A GRANT OF EXCHANGE WITH THE PRIORY IN THE WOOD OF WLVERDALE. THE SUBSEQUENT HISTORY OF THE PARK IS UNCLEAR AND ITS AREA AND BOUNDS HAVE NOT CERTAINLY BEEN IDENTIFIED OR DEFINED. {1}~
