Full Description

Documentary references (of 1148/1154, 1175, and 1533), though inconclusive, indicate that the site may have been a hunting lodge or keeper's lodge in an early medieval deer park (PRN 50397) that included extensively managed woodlands. The site consists of a roughly polygonal area enclosed on the south-west, north-west and north-east by a broad ditch 1m deep and with a well-marked inner bank. This bank survives to a height of 1.5m on the north-west, but on the north-east it is only 0.3m high. Near the south corner it forms a 1m high flat platform 15m across. The entrance in the centre of the south-west side is probably original although the ditch must have been bridged at this point. A gap on the north-east is modern. The south-east side of the site follows the course of an artificially deepened stream, here the parish boundary with Goltho. The broad flat-topped bank on the south-east of this stream is the boundary bank of Great West Wood. Attached to the south-west side of the enclosure is a further small rectangular enclosure bounded on the south-east by the stream, on the north-west by a shallow ditch and on the south by an embanked pond. It is subdivided by a short cross-ditch. A narrow bank to the west is shown as a field boundary on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map. Other small rectangular ponds exist in the surrounding area. The location of the enclosures on the parish boundary and their detailed form as well as their relationship to the woodland combine with the documentary indications to make a hunting lodge the most plausible explanation. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} A watching brief was carried out by Ian George in April 1992 during work to extend the forestry commission roadway and provide a vehicle turning area. {6}{7}
