Full Description

PRN 42286 St Martin's Church, Scamblesby was rebuilt in the 1890s. Previously it had been a 'small fabric'. In the rebuilding, a pier of Norman/Early English (1066 to the 13th century) style from the demolished Cawkwell Church was re-used. {1}{2}{3} During a site visit, it was noted that the former road arrangements around the church are suggestive of an earlier village focus around the church. A gate to the south of the church opens into what is now an arable field, but formerly there was a track here leading to the southern church gate. The eastern boundary of the church is built up to a higher level than the adjacent land, and the southernmost part of the churchyard has been raised about a metre above the level of the adjacent fields. This suggests that when the church was rebuilt in the 19th century, it was apparently done with a different road and plot arrangement than previously.{3} A parish church built in 1893, by R. H. Fowler, re-using some late 12th century fragments.
