SCAMBLESBY CHURCH LANE TF 27 NE (south side) 6/31 Church of St.Martin 14.9.66 II Parish church. 1893, by R. H. Fowler, re-using some late C12 fragments. Green sandstone rubble, limestone ashlar dressings. Slate roofs with stone coped gables, decorative red ridge tiles, tall chimney with chamfered sides, to north; and gabled west bellcote with chamfered, pointed opening containing bell, with hood mould, ornate label stops and finial. Nave with west bellcote, north and south aisles and south porch, chancel. 2 stage buttresses define north and south aisles on west front with string course running beneath a pair of lancets with single small lancets in each aisle. Vesica above; all the windows with hood moulds and label stops. North side of nave with a pair of lancets flanked by single lancets. East end of the north aisle with re-used later C12 lancet. North side of chancel with a rectangular window with 2 cusped ogee headed lights'and hood mould. East end with pointed window with 2 cusped ogee headed lights, geometrical tracery and hood mould. South side of chancel with 2 rectangular windows, each with 2 cusped ogee headed lights and hood mould. Pointed priests' doorway to west with broad ashlar surround, plank door and hood mould. East end of south aisle of nave with C19 lancet. South side of nave with a single lancet with a pair of lancets to west. Gabled porch beyond with pointed doorway with continuously chamfered surround and hood mould. Inner pointed doorway with continuously chamfered surround, hood mould, head label stops and double plank doors. Interior with C19 3 bay north and south arcades with pointed double chamfered heads, round piers each with 4 detached shafts, moulded capitals and corbelled responds. However, the easternmost pier in the south arcade is re-used late C12 fabric from the demolished church of Cawkwell, with octagonal, chevroned pier with 4 attached columns. Pointed, double chamfered chancel arch with hood mould and corbelled responds. Priests' doorway with inner segmental head. C19 pews, altar, reredos, lectern, pulpit, vestry screen and wagon roofs. Monuments include: one ornate vesica shaped panel on rectangular field, of orange streaked marble, with trefoiled arch supported on columns and flower and foliate motifs, to Reading Grantham, died 1859, sculpted by P. Belton. Another marble monument with orange streaks, rectangular with eared and shouldered corners containing flower heads, to Margaret Henry, death undated, but probably mid C18. Large C13 drum font with octagonal pedestal with 4 attached shafts. Listing NGR: TF2762978474
