Full Description
Gunby is mentioned in 1086 and later, and was separately assessed in the early 14th century subsidy rolls. 15 families were living there in the reign of Elizabeth 1. Surface evidence indicates old field banks and drainage channels. Air photos show hollow ways, toft sites and probable ponds. The church and hall appear to be built over the old village site. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
Parts of the deserted village of Gunby, comprising probable late medieval crofts, tofts, boundaries and hollow ways, were identified on aerial photographs by the National Mapping Programme. {8}
Earthwork remains of the village were noted in 1986, during the archaeological assessment of the National Trust's Gunby Hall estate. The remains were recorded as a series of hollow ways, some 4m wide and up to 2m deep, which defined flat raised areas of settlement. {9}
Remains of part of the deserted medieval village of Gunby were recorded during an earthwork survey, conducted in July 2013, in the parkland at Gunby Hall. The survey was designed to be a training exercise for local volunteers, and focussed on the area of the park to the south-east of Gunby Hall and the Church of St Peter. The survey identified the earthwork remains of at least four rectilinear medieval tofts arranged around a central open space, possibly a green. The tofts were delineated by a network of sunken linear features, interpreted as former hollow ways and boundary ditches. An old watercourse was also identified in the north-eastern corner of the surveyed area, which may have been active during the occupation of the village. {10}{11}
