Full Description

Possible late medieval earthwork field system to the north-west of Gunby deserted medieval village, identified on aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. {1} Remains of the medieval ridge and furrow in this area were noted in 1986, during the archaeological assessment of the National Trust's Gunby Hall estate. The remains were recorded as a series of parallel linear earthworks roughly 3-4m wide and 0.5-0.7m high. {2} Traces of the ridge and furrow were identified in July 2013, during a magnetometry survey conducted on land at Gunby Hall. The remains were identified as a series of parallel linear magnetic anomalies, including one which may represent a former headland, defining the southern limit of the open field in this area. {3}
