The church tower and spire were found to be unstable in 1991, and engineering works were subsequently conducted to remedy the situation by underpinning the tower. {7}
An arcaheological watching brief was conducted in 1997, during the removal of a modern cement floor within the nave of the church. Several undated layers, thought to have possibly formed earlier floor surfaces, were uncovered along with foundation trenches for the standing 15th century nave walls. The remains of two substantial east to west aligned walls were also revealed, running along the same axis as the north and south piers. The walls were made of roughly finished sandstone blocks with a core of flint cobbles. It was thought possible that these features were the remains of an earlier, smaller nave, predating the 15th century alterations. Several unstratified sherds of 13th to 14th century medieval shelly ware pottery were also recovered during the monitoring, and a single redeposited fragment of human skull was also identified (although not disturbed). {8}{9}
