Description
An archaeological watching brief was conducted during the removal of a modern cement floor within the nave of the Church of St Peter, South Somercotes. Several undated layers, thought to have possibly formed earlier floor surfaces, were uncovered along with foundation trenches for the standing 15th century nave walls. The remains of two substantial east to west aligned walls were also revealed, running along the same axis as the north and south piers. Several unstratified sherds of medieval pottery and a single fragment of human skull were also identified. {1}{2}
