Full Description

South Somercotes war memorial stands in the churchayrd to the north of the Church of St Peter. Unveiled in 1920, the memorial was erected by Messrs Mawer Brothers of Louth. The design is of a Celtic cross with a crusader sword depicted on the front. Executed in Cornish granite, it commemorates those who perished in the First World War. {1} This memorial is an accomplished and well-realised monument, taking the form of a granite cross with a Celtic wheel head on a tapered shaft. The cross has a sword carved in relief on its front face, and rises from a tapering square plinth on a single stepped base. The monument was unveiled on Sunday 24 October 1920. It commemorates five members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War.
