An early Bronze Age settlement site on a sandy ridge close to alluvium. {1}
Evaluation work was carried out in 1994 as part of the Fenland Management Project. Two north/south aligned ditches were recorded, one containing Bronze Age pottery. A layer of burnt stone, burnt flint, flint and pottery was thought to be the last remnants of a burnt mound. A series of ard marks were thought to predate the finds, which were thought to have been deposited in the late Bronze Age. A gully, pits and postholes were also recorded. A small pit or posthole contained sherds of at least twelve different pottery vessels arranged in a layered concentric manner. The pottery is predominantly late Bronze Age in date, although some early Bronze Age sherds may be present. Environmental sampling indicated an open site with weedy grassland and areas of disturbed and trampled ground. Large amounts of charcoal were noted, with some charred cereal, sloe stone fragments and hazelnut shell. Some of the ceramic finds may be briquetage, post-dating the agricultural phase represented by the ard marks.{2}
