Description

Trial trenching was carried out as part of the Fenland Management Project. Two trenches were placed over two of the densest concentrations of finds. The northern trench (Trench 1) measured 60m by 10m and was also positioned adjacent to the extinct stream. To gain good quality environmental evidence a smaller 1.5m wide trench was dug from the south-western corner of Trench 1 towards the extinct watercourse. The southern trench (Trench 2) measured 25m by 10m and was placed over a geophysical anomaly. Sixty-five 1m square test pits were also excavated on a chequerboard grid in the vicinity of a burnt mound, in order to obtain standardised finds and bulk sample retrieval.{1}
