Full Description

A moated site of possible medieval date, thought to indicate the original site of the manor house at Mareham le Fen. Finds of medieval date were found during cleaning of the moat. These finds included fragments of worked stone, thought to have been from Revesby monastery, scatters of 14th to 16th century pottery, and a carved oak panel from a chest. The panel depicts a man in early 16th century costume within a roundel. A few post-medieval sherds of pottery were also found. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} A small area of the moated feature at Mareham le Fen was excavated in 1997, as part of an investigation into its origin. The excavation revealed that the feature likely dated to the late 18th or early 19th century, rather than the previous supposed medieval date. The presence of several very unsual trees on and around the site led to the interpretation of the moat as a garden feature, dug to help with the drainage of this area. The remains of a late 19th or early 20th century structure was also revealed on the island. This structure was reminiscent of other structures seen in Tierra Del Fuego, and was thought to have been built using material taken from the remains of Revesby monastery, which may explain the previous confusion over the dating of the site. {6}
