Full Description

This record represents the Roman remains identified from an excavation at Creeton Quarry which has revealed a metalworking site with evidence for iron smelting and smithing. The date range is 550 BC to 100 AD. Pottery dating to the middle of the third century was also recovered. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} During the excavation, 400kg of slag was found along with charcoal, fired clay, iron smelting debris and twenty two sherds of Roman pottery. Evidence of six furnaces was also revealed. {3}{4}{5}{6}
