PRN 34043
A LARGE, MOUNDED SITE WHICH PROBABLY CONTINUES UNDER THE ROAD AND INTO ADJACENT FIELDS. POTTERY IS MIDDLE IRON AGE AS WELL AS ROMAN (SEE 34044). 98 POTSHERDS WEIGHING 1.225KG. {1}
A MIDDLE IRON AGE SITE WITH SOME AMBIGUOUS EVIDENCE FOR CONTINUITY THROUGH THE LATE IRON AGE INTO THE ROMAN PERIOD (SEE PRN 34044). WHEN THE SHERDS COLLECTED ON THIS SITE WERE EXAMINED BY SPECIALISTS, 92 WERE JUDGED TO BE MIDDLE IRON AGE AND 422 WERE ROMAN. NONE COULD CONFIDENTLY BE ASCRIBED TO THE PERIOD 150 BC-AD 100. {2}

Excavation was carried out as part of the Fenland Management Project. Four uprights in the base of a paleochannel represented a timber structure which probably extended along the channel beyond the limits of the excavation. Alignments of small stakes ran parallel to the bank within the channel base. An assemblage of wood, animal bone, cobbles and Iron Age pottery lay around the base of the timbers and stakes, including carpentry waste and offcuts. Briquetage-rich deposits lay in and above a ditch with an associated fence line. A La Tene II style copper alloy and iron brooch was recovered from the paleochannel.{5}
