Description
An archaeological excavation was carried out as part of the Fenland Management Project. An area measuring circa 80m by 30m was opened over part of the main settlement zone and across the depression/paleochannel. Sections were hand dug through the most obvious features but it soon became clear that the thickness of deposits made for an urban-like sequence and complexity. A sondage measuring 3m by 22m was hand dug on the east of the site in order to understand the deposits more fully. This was lengthened by machine to the southern bank of the paleochannel. Many features were recorded in plan only due to the time-consuming nature of the excavation of a deposit of wood and bone.{1}
