Full Description

PRN 33437 St Guthlac's church, Market Deeping, is Transitional to Perpendicular, poorly restored and somewhat enlarged in 1878. Church is in normal use. {1}{2} One enters the church by a doorway - the south doorway - of the late 12th century. One order of shafts with waterleaf capitals. Arch with roll-mouldings. Waterleaf also in the arch to the former north chapel. But the arch is pointed. The three-bay north arcade is of the early 13th century. Quatrefoil piers with undetailed capitals. The abaci circular, embracing the whole quatrefoil (cf Langtoft). Double-chamfered round arches. The south arcade is of c.1300. The quatrefoils have continuous hollows between the abaci and the foils, the arches are pointed. The chancel arch is part of James Fowler's drastic restoration of 1877-78, but the sedilia, the former priest's doorway, and the ogee-arched piscina are decorated. The two vaulted niches left and right of the Perpendicular east window are Perpendicular too. The window has a transom. Perpendicular clerestory, Perpendicular south aisle windows, Perpendicular west tower with clasping buttresses, a deep niche in the south-west buttress, and four-light bell-openings in pairs of two with the middle mullion reaching up to the apex of the arch. Castellated transoms. The north aisle exterior must all be of the restoration. Perpendicular octagonal font with foiled or cusped fields. Door with ironwork of the early 14th century, two pairs of C-hinges and elaborately scrolled straps. Stained glass: south aisle east by H.Hughes, 1880; north aisle (vergelle window) 1920 by H.Hendry: two large figures, good, in the English wood-engraving tradition, still based on the 1890s. Monuments: many coffin-lids with foliated crosses. A good graveyard with 18th century table-tombs. {3} A parish church dating from the late 12th century, with additions in the early 13th century, early 14th century, 1440, 15th century, c1500; restoration 1875 by James Fowler of Louth. Listed grade I.
