Full Description

Norman to Perpendicular church. Mainly of 12th century date, of which tower with 14th century spire and south arcade remain, with 14th and 15th century alterations. The south arcade dates from the 14th century and the south porch to the 15th century. {1}{2}{3} Parish church dating from the 12th century, with alterations from the 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th and 18th centuries, and restored 1865 and 1887. Built of limestone and ironstone coursed rubble, with ashlar dressings. Features plaint tiled and lead roofs, and comprised of a west tower, nace, chancel and south porch. The 13th century ironstone tower is of three stages divided by chamfered string courses. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {4}{5} Medieval stained glass in this church dates to the 15th and 17th centuries. {6} The Church of St Nicholas contains some 12th century features, with work from each succeeding century. {7} Fragments from a late medieval Cistercian ware cup were found in February 2009, during archaeological monitoring of groundworks for the installation of a new toilet within the tower. The fragments were thought to be from a small cup-like vessel, and included the handle and basal sherds. {8}{9}
