Full Description

The churchyard at the Church of St Nicholas is depicted on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. It likely dates to at least the 12th century, when the church it serves was built (see MLI30411). {1} A small quantity of redeposited human bone was identified in the graveyard soil in April 1998, during archaeological monitoring of the installation of a new electrical service to the Church of St Nicholas. None of the fragments could be closely dated, and all were reburied in the churchyard after the works were completed. {2}{3} A further small quantity of redeposited human bone was identified in the graveyard soil in February 2009, during archaeological monitoring of the installation of a new sewer pipe at the Church of St Nicholas. Again, none of the fragments could be closely dated, and all were reburied in the churchyard after the works were completed. {4}{5}
